Frequently Asked Questions

Why is a seamless scull boat better than one with a seam?

One function of the scull boat is to minimize the visual profile exposed to birds. Any surface area which creates shadow or decreases the blending of the boat with the water in the background decreases the boat’s effectiveness. A seem does this.

What advantage does a variable coaming height give you?

Not all scullers are alike. One function of the coaming is to conceal the sculler and his movement while sculling. The bigger the sculler, the higher the coaming needs to be to conceal him. Unfortunately as the coaming height increases so does the visual profile that the bird sees, therefore you only want the coaming as high as necessary to conceal you? Another advantage of having a variable coaming is that it is easily replaced in the event it is damaged.

What is the advantage of flooring in a scull boat?

While sculling it is common to get some moisture in the boat from getting in and out of the boat, splash, rain, ect. A floor lifts the sculler above this moisture and allows it to drain and collect in the keel. Once on shore it can be drained with the drain hole or sumped while still afloat.

What is the ballast tray used for?

The scull boat has an ideal position in the water. Different loading, seating positions and actual sculler weight may change the position of the boat in the water and the ballast repositions it back to the correct stance.
